For Firiel's fifteenth birthday, her father whom she never sees, gives her a necklace that was originally her mother's.She's invited to a ball while wearing the necklace and the people of the dance are appaled. They accuse her of being a thief since the necklace given to her is considered an empress heirloom. Back home, she finds her father's book in fire and the people at her home tell her to run away.
